If you are indulging in any sort of crime, be it small or big, you are ought to be accounted for it. A few of the crimes are heinous to such an extent that they shatter souls and destroy the lives of innocent people. Rape is one such crime that is much more than an atrocity or a massacre.

Rape is one of the least reported crime which itself is a huge sign of worry. It could be due to a number of reasons. Women are unable to report rape cases because of the awful stigma attached to raped women. Such women are not treated equally in many societies. Plus, they have to go through a lot of troubles; financially and mentally.

Rape and sexual assaults on both the genders have only increased in recent times. The barbarism requires the death penalty and that too in an outrageous manner so that no one ever thinks of tarnishing a living soul.

Despite a number of rape cases going unreported, the statistics have depicted a few countries that have always remained on the top when it comes to rape crimes. Today, we are going to have a look at the top 12 countries that are on top of the list, having the highest number of rape crimes.

12) Denmark and Finland

It is quite unfortunate to state that out of every 3 women in Europe, 1 woman has gone through some form of sexual assault and 5% of them have been raped.

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights issued a study in 2014, stating that around 47% of the women surveyed have been subjected to some sort of physical violence in Finland. Plus, 52% of women have suffered sexual/physical abuse in Finland which is mind-numbing.

Apart from that, Finland was the last country in the EU to criminalize marital rape, terming it prohibited in the year 1994.

11) Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is unfortunately at the ninth position with the most rape cases in the world. A truly shocking fact is that every 90 minutes, a woman goes through a sexual assault in Zimbabwe. The latest study of the Zimbabwe National Statistics (ZimStat) stated that 500 women were sexually assaulted in a month, making it 16 women being raped daily on average.

Zimbabwe is also a notorious country for child rapes. According to UNICEF, child rape exists for about 42% in Zimbabwe. Plus, the cases of the rapes of minors increased from 2,192 in 2010 to 3,112 in 2014. The rest of the cases went unreported due to the fear of shame.

10) Australia

In Australia, the reported rape rate per 100,000 people is fairly high. The last year’s statistics show that around 51,200 Australians were sexually assaulted, who were aged 18 or above.  According to News.com, 1 out of 6 Australian women have encountered sexual violence from a non-partner, compared to 1 in 14, all over the world.

Mostly, in Australia, the women who are aged above 15 are sexually assaulted. Australia came third as it was reported that around 16.4% of the women are raped other than their partners.

Karen Willis, the NSW Rape Crisis Centre executive officer claimed that most of the rape and sexual assaults are conducted by the own family members, friends and close relatives which definitely comes as a shocker!

9) Canada

Among all the heinous crimes, the rape crime showed an evident surge in the reported rates in Canada. It is surveyed that out of every 4 North American women, 1 has to go through physical abuse once in their entire lifetime.

11% of women procure extreme injuries due to rape. Plus, it is also reported that only 6% of the cases are reported to the police. 80% of the rape crimes are attempted at women and most of them are rooted in the house that they live in. The close relatives and family members are involved in such crimes.

83% of the disabled women face sexual assault which is a fact quite hard to digest, to be honest!

 

8) New Zealand

New Zealand became extremely notorious regarding rape cases after The Roast Busters scandal in 2013. A group of a few young men, belonging to West Auckland, terming themselves as the Roast Busters deliberately intoxicated women and used to gang rape them.

A British Medical Journal, known as The Lancet reported that sexual assault’s rate in New Zealand is higher than the rest of the world. According to the Minister of Justice Publication Report, it was stated that every two hours, an attack involving physical abuse is conducted in New Zealand.

Out of all the reported rapes, around 13% end up with a result. A whopping 91% of the cases go unreported or are dropped due to certain pressures.

7) India

Rape and sexual violence have emerged to become a huge problem in India, especially in New Delhi. According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), rape crimes have been increased by 7.5% since 2010 which is unacceptable to the core!

Mostly, the young women, aged around 18 to 30 have been raped in India. You might call me insane but in India, a woman is raped every 20 minutes! Around 93 women are being raped every day.

New Delhi has remained on the top out of every other city of India in reporting the rape crimes. Additionally, the offenders have been family members, and close relatives. Apart from that, the people working in homes have said to be the backbone of such sexual assaults.

Still, there is a huge majority in India that hides rape cases and brush it under the cover!

6) England and Wales

In England and Wales, around 85,000 rape survivors have reported rape cases in a single year. Out of all these survivors, 73,000 have been females and 12,000 have been males. Collectively, it makes an average of 230 rape cases every day.

Apart from that, one out of every six women has faced some sort of physical violence since the age of 16. BBC Reports stated that around 29% of the increase has been noticed in the reporting of rape crimes. Also, an overall downshift has been experienced in terms of such crimes in England and Wales.

 

5) USA

According to George Mason University, Worldwide Sexual Assault Statistics, 1 out of 3 women will be sexually assaulted during their entire lifespan. Around 19.3% of the women and 2% of the women have faced sexual abuse once in their lives.

According to RAIIN, every 107 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted in the United States of America. 68% of the rape cases go unreported and the families do not involve the police. Plus, 98% of the rapists will not even spend a single day in jail, unfortunately!

4) Sweden

Sweden has been ranked in the top 2 in terms of rape crimes, nearly behind South Africa. Statistics have shown a figure in which it was depicted that 1 out of every 4 Swedish women have been raped. The crime has only increased in Sweden. In 1975, only 421 rapes were reported to the police. While, in 2014, the number increased to 6620.

In Europe, Sweden has been on the top due to the rape crimes.

3) South Africa

With a large number of 500,000 rape cases every year, South Africa has been the top country with a huge number of rape cases. It has been estimated that around more than 40% of the South African women would be raped in their lifetime.

However, a very small number of rape crimes have been reported to the police. Yet there has been a chaotic situation in South Africa, being an infamous country for rapes. In a report, it was stated that around 4% of men have been forced to have sex with other men.

In South Africa, many minors have been sexually assaulted too. A report indicated that around 15% of rape victims are under the age of 11.

 

2) Ethiopia

Ethiopia has been the country with the most rape cases against women. According to a study conducted by the UN, around 60% of Ethiopian women were subjected to sexual abuse. Due to being a highly underdeveloped, the country is disreputable for many crimes, especially rape.

The men of Ethiopia abduct young women and assault them physically, leaving the woman in extreme pain and in a situation of adversity for the present life and the years to come!

1) Sri Lanka

Let alone the civilians, Sri Lanka’s military has been raping the women, terming them as suspects. After the civil war ended, the military forces of Sri Lanka continued their torture upon the innocent public.

The country has the highest suicide rates as the women and other rape victims feel it difficult to survive after being assaulted.
